“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” — James 2:17 (NIV)
Dear Sponsor,
It’s rare for me to send a request like this, but today we’re facing a very real and devastating threat to the world’s most vulnerable children and families. So I’m asking you to take one simple, quick action that can literally change the world.
The budget recently passed by the House of Representatives incorporates drastic cuts to essential programs that help the very people the Bible calls us to care for — the poorest, the most marginalized, “the least of these.”
This budget shrinks global AIDS, malaria, and hunger programs by 41 percent. It slashes funding for humanitarian emergencies by 67 percent. By comparison, other budget accounts are reduced by an average of just 8 percent. To put this in perspective, the existing U.S. budget for international humanitarian programs is only about one-half of 1 percent of the total federal budget.
You can help avert this disaster. The Senate will be voting on the budget by March 4. Please take the simple step of contacting your senators today using our online action form. Let them know you oppose the House’s short-sighted cuts to anti-poverty programs.
The Bible calls us to good stewardship, and World Vision applauds efforts to address the mounting federal deficit. But these crushing, disproportionate cuts to humanitarian programs — funding that not only saves lives but promotes global security and goodwill — are a betrayal of the values that we as Americans and people of faith hold dear.
The frightening truth is that countless children will needlessly die unless you and I put our faith into action today. Please join us in urging the Senate to protect funding for the global poor.
God bless,
/s/ Rich Stearns
